Shadows (from River and Rainbow)
Walter Carroll.
ABRSM Grade 3 Piano 2019 - 2020.
Teaching Notes
This piece will test your pedalling technique. Make sure you LIFT the pedal exactly on the point of the change of harmony and put it down again soon after. A common mistake when people start pedalling, is to put it down on the beat, rather than lift it on the beat.Apart from the pedalling marks printed in the ABRSM Grade 3 Piano edition, I have also added a pedal to each chord in bars 25 and 27 to enable a smooth legato.
When pedalling, be sure to not let go of sustained notes that would otherwise be lost when you change pedal. For example the long dotted minims in the bass of bars 1-6.
Apart from good pedalling, the examiner will be looking out for tonal control of the melody. This happens to be dotted crotchets in the RH that sustain the lowest notes of the broken chord. Try to give a little extra weight to these dotted crotchets to make the melody stand out.
Finally notice the shape of the phrases, outlined by the crescendo/decrescendo markings which, along with the 6/8 time signature will create a lilting/rocking feel, thus depicting the composers impression of a night piece where the river flows into the sea.
