Petite Valse
Brian Chapple
ABRSM Grade 2 Piano 2019 - 2020.
This piece may seem fairly straight forward, but in order to get a good mark in the exam you will need excellent tonal control. The chords must always be light and delicate so as to not overpower the melody, which at first is in the RH and then moves to the LH in the second half.
Pay attention also to the phrasing (as marked by the curved phrase lines). There should be a little lift between phrases as if you were breathing when singing the tune.
There are some tricky little fingering suggestions in the ABRSM edition in bars 19-21 to enable a smooth legato. The fingering 2-4, indicates that you should substitute your 2nd finger for your 4th, without letting go of the note.
Regarding the speed, notice the tempo is marked with a dotted minim beat. In order for it to flow as a Valse, it needs to have a "one in a bar" feel, which will be helped by leaning on the melody notes, (generally the 1st beat of the bar) and lightening the 2nd and 3rd beats (generally the chordal accompaniment).
Finally, in addition to the "rall" marked in the music, I have incorporated a slight easing of the tempo in bars 15-16, before picking up the tempo again in bar 17. Have another listen to the video and see if you can spot this slowing down in the middle.
