In Grade 1 you learned all the time signatures with a number 4 at the bottom. This 4 at the bottom meant that there was a crotchet beat. So "3/4" time was "three crotchet beats in a bar".
In Grade 2 you will come across the numbers 2 and 8 at the bottom of the time signatures.
Therefore 3/8 time means "three quaver beats in a bar" and 3/2 time means "three minim beats in a bar".
There is also one more sign you should be aware of. A "C"with a line through it is called "cut time" and is an abbreviation for 2/2 time (2 minims in a bar).
