Teaching Notes
It is worth reading the footnote at the bottom of the ABRSM edition to get an idea of how to play this music. In short, the mood should be celebratory and triumphant.
You will notice in this recording that the crotchets are often separated, a common stylistic way to play music from this period. When using this technique, be careful when one hand is detached and the other hand is smooth, such as in bar 4.
The second half has a more legato feel, but in all cases, be sure to release the last note of any slurred group. For example, detach the last note of bar 10, from the first note of bar 11.
Dynamics are editorial, in other words, not original and you are free to use another interpretation, but in general, the smoother 3rd line would suggest a softer tone.
In ABRSM exams, repeats are not usually played which in this case leaves us a dilemma, that is what dynamic to use, as the ABRSM edition instructs us to play the 3rd line "mf" the second time. Although we will use the 2nd time bar right at the end I would still play this line "p". As mentioned above, the change of mood here would benefit from a more contrasting dynamic.
The "rit" in bar 15, which is also marked "2nd time only" should be observed.
