Another name for the first degree of a scale is called, "The Tonic".

A triad is a group of three notes played at the same time (a chord) and the tonic triad uses the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of the scale.


In the example below the key signature is G major and the tonic is therefore the note G. The tonic triad consists of the notes G, B and D (the 1st, 3rd and 5th degrees of the scale of G major.
